Beijing Strives to Be Free from Trash Pollution
Adjust font size:
The Chinese capital is aiming to treat all the garbage in the city by 2005.

To this end, Beijing will build a group of new rubbish incinerators and dumping grounds in the next three years while continuing to make efforts toward reducing the amount of trash, according to the Beijing Olympic Action Plan.

Statistics show that Beijing now produces three million tons of trash each year, of which, one million tons are produced by urban districts.

By 2001, the city had constructed and put into service 14 modern trash treatment facilities, where 86 percent of the city's trash is treated.

The city has been levying varying fees on a monthly basis from each urban household and transient people in the city since 1999 to support its garbage treatment.

In the meantime, the production of rubbish in the city has decreased in recent years, according to statistics.

Beijing, with a population of 13 million, will host the 28th Olympic Games in 2008 under the themes "The Green Olympics, the High-tech Olympics, the People's Olympics."
