Rare Landscaping Trees Destroyed by Termites

Staff put medicine into landscaping trees on Tuesday, July 3, 2007.

The phocnixes canarionsis, or date palm trees of Nanchang Bayi Square, in Jiangxi Province are being eroded by termites. Staff from a termite-prevention research institute insufflated medicine into the eroded trees and took out preventative measures on surrounding ones on Tuesday.

Termite staff found that the mites have infested many of the landscaping trees. Obvious traces like yellow powder, "termite pathways" and holes can be found in many of the date palm trees, the Information Daily reports.

The probable origin of the termites is nearby buildings, according to the investigating staff. The roaming scope of a termite colony is generally around 60 meters. There are termites to be found in buildings surrounding the square—they fly around after mass reproduction and inhabit nearby, appropriate places. Besides which, the acidic soil of the square is suitable for termites reproduction, which is also a possible reason for the termite invasion.

There are many categories of termites, those most dangerous to trees are mainly earth dwelling ones. They live underground and like eating bark. Termites may eat up a whole tree trunk in pursuit of food, leading a tree to death due to lack of nutrients. Therefore, these rare palm trees will most likely die out soon if prevention or a cure is not taken in time, according to staff of the Nanchang Termite-Prevention Research Institute.

Medicine is applied to the soil near the trees roots, which will help control the termites' reproduction and spreading. Termite-proofing treatments should be administered to rare trees when they are planted, staff suggested.

Staffs are insufflating liquid medicine into landscaping tress to prevent further termite infestation on Tuesday, July 3, 2007.
