A leading Sino-French scientific research lab said in Beijing Thursday that it will carry out further research into environmental changes over time.

 

LIAMA, the Computer Science, Automation and Applied Mathematics Laboratory, made the promise at its 10th birthday celebration.

 

LIAMA is the only permanent academic laboratory that brings together Chinese and French researchers.

 

A lab official said the research will focus on remote sensing pictures, data, mathematical models and visible information technologies to tackle severe environmental problems such as sandstorms.

 

"We will bring more senior researchers out here to cooperate with our Chinese counterparts," said Michel Cosnard, chairman and CEO of the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA).

 

Co-sponsored by INRIA and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the lab was set up in 1997 to promote cooperation in IT, automation and other fields.

 

Currently, LIAMA has over 70 senior research scientists, of whom six are French. Staff number will soon top 100, said Jiang Tianzi, the Chinese Director of LIAMA.
