Beijing has promulgated that cars in the city must achieve the Euro II standards from October 1, 2004 in a bid to improve the environment and reduce air pollution caused by car emission, gas and diesel oil.
Experts with the municipal environmental protection bureau say the major source of pollution in Beijing is suspended particulate matter from car emissions.
Beijing has promised to lift its air quality to 80 percent of days at Grade 2, rather than the current 60 per cent, before the city hosts the Olympics in 2008.
The Beijing Municipal Administration for Industry and Commerce has organized publicity activities to make oil firms aware of the new regulations for implementing environmental standards.
All fuels sold in Beijing will have to meet the new Euro II standards by October 20 or face severe punishment.
