Chinese State Councilor, Chen Zhili, on Thursday called for improvements to postgraduate education to provide more skills for national development.
The country's on-campus postgraduates exceed one million and over one million students have received doctorate and masters degrees. The quality of postgraduate education has been recognized by the international community, Chen said.
Postgraduate education should be more comprehensive and coordinated and raise knowledge and morality levels, Chen explained at a meeting of the Degree Committee under the State Council.
Students required to be given more training in detecting, analyzing and solving problems rather than learning theories, said Chen. She advocated the establishment of an effective quality monitoring system for postgraduate education.
Chen also called for improved training for supervisors and indicated that their sense of responsibility should be raised.
Examples of good quality postgraduate education should be identified for all higher education institutes and the setting of postgraduate courses required optimizing, Chen observed.
