Shakespeare Classics Delight Chinese Youngsters

Shakespearean prose isn't usually popular with children. But the China National Children's Art Theater is now trying to change this. They're putting several of Shakespeare's classics on Chinese stages with a few changes.

For most Chinese primary and middle school students, the place to learn about classic Western literature is in school. But now there's a new alternative -- going to the theater. No, not the movie theater -- Shakespeare classics like Twelfth Night, Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice are hitting Chinese stages, and being performed by Chinese actors and actresses. And there's some interpretation being added, too. Snappy dialogue and lively acting are allowing the plays to be more accessible to younger audience. This year also marked the 440th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. Organizers are hoping the productions will excite another wave of interest from a new generation of Chinese youngsters.
