Mayor of Beijing
Meng Xuenong, a native from Penglai City in east China's Shandong Province, was born in August 1949. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in July 1972 and began work in March 1969. He holds a postgraduate MBA qualification.
Meng has served successively as worker and secretary of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) Committee at the Beijing No. 2 Motor Vehicle Plant, office cadre at Beijing Automobile Industry Corporation, cadre of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee's Organizational Department, secretary of the Zhejiang provincial general office, deputy secretary and secretary of the Beijing Automobile Industry Corporation's CYLC Committee, deputy secretary of the CYLC Beijing Municipal Committee, general manager and Party secretary of the Beijing Hotel Association Corporation, and director and Party chief of the Beijing Municipal Administration of Industry and Commerce.
Meng was elected as deputy mayor at the first session of the 10th Beijing People's Congress in February 1993. In April 1996, he served as deputy secretary of the Committee of Political and Legislative Affairs under the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee. He was elected as deputy mayor of Beijing in January 1998.
From May 1998 to December 1999, Meng served as member of the Preparatory Committee for the Macao Special Administrative Region under the National People's Congress. Since December 1998, he has been a standing committee member of the 8th and ninth CPC Beijing Municipal Committee. In December 2002, he served as the deputy secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee.
In January 2003, he was elected as the mayor of Beijing at the fourth plenary session of the 12th Beijing People's Congress.
He is member of the 16th CPC Central Committee.
