Academy's Team for Relics Protection and Utilization
The relics protection team from the Dunhuang Academy was granted the title of "National Outstanding Engineering Team" at the commendation ceremony of the National Engineer Award in January 2024.
The Dunhuang Academy has gradually assembled a high- quality protection technology team of nearly 200 technical personnel. They integrate production, learning, research, and application. In 1944, the National Dunhuang Art Research Institute established a protection and research team for clearing sand, restoring murals, and reinforcing cliff bodies in the Dunhuang caves. In 2014, the team opened the Dunhuang Caves Monitoring Center to enhance its protection efforts.
This team, spanning several generations, remains true to its original mission and continues to strive in the depths of the desert and between the cliffs. They tackle various technical challenges hindering the protection of ancient murals and the safeguarding of earthen sites and cave temples by monitoring and implementing preventive protection of Silk Road heritage, relics at excavation sites, and rock and soil artifacts. While ensuring the everlasting brilliance of cultural heritage, they work extremely hard to make breakthroughs in technological innovation and fight against nature as well as time. The technological concepts continuously developed by the team have been promoted nationwide and benefited the cultural heritage protection efforts of other countries along the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) route.
