International Dunhuang Project
Established in 1994, the International Dunhuang Project (IDP) is a highly-effective collaboration focused on digitization of Dunhuang and Western Regions literature and artifacts. Its secretariat is located at the British Library. The IDP website (http:// idp.nlc.cn/) was opened in 1998.
This pioneering international collaboration aims to make information and images of manuscripts, paintings, textiles, and artworks unearthed from Dunhuang and other archaeological sites along the eastern Silk Road freely accessible on the internet. It is dedicated to promoting international cooperation in the preservation, restoration, and research of documents, providing high-quality images of Dunhuang literature to users worldwide, and encouraging the utilization of these resources through educational and research initiatives. The IDP has established centers through partnerships in various cities including Beijing, St. Petersburg, Kyoto, Berlin, Dunhuang, and Paris. Major Dunhuang literature collections from China, the UK, France, and Russia have IDP centers, with over 20 collaborating institutions globally. The National Library of China and the Dunhuang Academy are the primary Chinese collaborators in the IDP as well as the operators of the Chinese version of the IDP website. As of September 2024, the IDP website had become the world's largest, most comprehensive database of Dunhuang cave literature and artifact images, featuring six language versions.
