Zero Waste in the Palace Museum

In January 2020, the Palace Museum joined hands with the Vanke Foundation to launch a zero-waste campaign, aiming to build a world-leading waste-free museum through adopting a science- based and meticulous approach to waste management, maximizing resource utilization efficiency and increasing public awareness of the response to climate change.

The campaign was divided into two stages: zero-waste office and zero-waste tours, which have been proceeding in a phased manner to promote waste reduction, recycling, and pollution-free treatment.

Internally, the Palace Museum has optimized the locations and appearances of trash bins based on analysis of data on visitors' environmental behavior, built eco-friendly composts for flower beds according to the landscape layout of the Forbidden City, and strengthened relevant training of staff members.

Externally, the museum advocates environmental protection among visitors through presenting zero-waste cultural and creative products as well as environmental brochures and videos and launching the "empty plate" campaign, zero-waste guided tours, and other activities.

In 2023, the zero-waste campaign of the Palace Museum was exhibited as an innovative practice at the COP28 UN Climate Change Conference, vividly showcasing the contributions made by China's culture, tourism, and museum sectors to green, low-carbon development worldwide.

The zero-waste campaign is an important measure of the Palace Museum to practice a green development philosophy. It has helped tell green development stories of Chinese museums, create a new calling card for the Palace Museum featuring "red walls and a green environment", and promote concepts of energy conservation and emission reduction throughout society.
