Regeneration of Ecosystems

Since the 1980s, China has adopted a number of policies for the regeneration of key ecosystems, such as protecting natural forests, turning marginal farmlands into forests and returning grazing lands to grasslands. 

In his report to the CPC's 19th National Congress, Xi Jinping emphasized the need to prioritize environmental protection, let nature restore itself, and intensify protection of ecosystems. He demanded a greater effort to strictly protect farmlands, expand trials in crop rotation and keeping land fallow, and improve the systems for regeneration of croplands, grasslands, forests, rivers and lakes. At the National Conference on Eco-environmental Protection held in May 2018, he again called for time and space for nature to recuperate.

Regeneration of ecosystems is needed for sustainable development. It will also contribute to an eco-civilization and harmony between humanity and nature.

生態系統休養生息

改革開放以來，中國大力推行保護天然林、退耕還林、退牧還草等生態保護措施，對重要生態系統實施休養生息。中共十九大提出堅持保護優先、自然恢復為主方針，加大生態系統保護力度，嚴格保護耕地，擴大輪作休耕試點，健全耕地草原森林河流湖泊休養生息制度。2018年5月，習近平在全國生態環境保護大會上強調，要給自然生態留下休養生息的時間和空間。

推進生態系統休養生息，是實現可持續發展的必然要求，是生態文明建設的新思路，體現了人與自然和諧共生的新追求。
