Environmental Double-Standards Inadmissible
Adjust font size:

Around 100 multinational corporations have been blacklisted as polluters by the Beijing-based Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs, according to Shanghai Securities News on August 28, 2007. Their actions have been condemned as adverse to China's development. The list includes major players such as Pepsi, GM and 3M.

A report 2007: Multinational Groups Through Chinese Eyes, published recently by Ipsos Group, shows that 73.1 percent of the investigated companies scored strongly unsatisfactory rating for transferring their polluting industrial elements and factories to China; 56.6 percent are worried that the multinational groups' purchasing of national enterprises, especially the state-owned ones, will harm the independence of China's economy.

Pepsi, Nestle, GM, Samsung and 3M are all among the world top 500 enterprises, while KFC and Pizza Hut under the American Parkson Catering Corporation are long-time players in the Chinese market. These companies have abundant capital, possess a thoroughly modernized environmental protection technology and should meet international criteria. It is shameful that they indulge in these double-standards, strictly enforcing environmental protection at home, yet practicing another social standard in developing countries.

Thus, perfecting the laws and regulations system, strengthening supervision and punishment, and suspending or closing down corporations in accordance with the law are top-priority tasks in order to restrain the multinational corps' reckless pollution in China.
