On August 9, the US express giant UPS began to build its international air hub at Pudong International Airport in Shanghai, which will also serve as the first international logistics center on the Chinese mainland. Due to begin operation in the second half of 2008, it will process 200,000 tons annually, about 10 percent of Pudong International Airport's yearly cargo throughput.
Richard Loi, the senior vice president of UPS Asia Pacific's Greater China District said that by 2012, 50 percent of UPS's cargoes in the Asia Pacific region would go through China. This is a continuation of UPS' China policy which has seen investment of around US$600 million in the country in five years.
