Located in the city of Huzhou, Feiying Pagoda was built between 884 and 894 during the Tang Dynasty. It is an octagonal five-storeyed solid pagoda, made of white stones. Carved on the surface of the pagoda are exquisite Buddhist statues and other decorative patterns. Between 968 and 975 during the Northern Song Dynasty another octagonal pagoda, a seven-storeyed structure of brick and wood, was built, enclosing the original stone pagoda inside. This pagoda, however, was destroyed by thunders in 1150 during the Southern Song Dynasty. The present inner pagoda was built after 1154 during the Southern Song Dynasty, and the outer pagoda was constructed in the same dynasty between 1234 and 1236. This unique structure, pagoda outside another pagoda, is an extremely rare example in architecture.
