Popular TV star Alec Su is to star as Mei Lanfang in a film to mark the 110th birth anniversary of the country's Peking opera legend.
But doubts remain as to whether the baby-faced TV star can match Mei Lanfang's sophisticated and versatile image on the opera stage.
He is compared to the late Hong Kong singer Leslie Cheung, who starred as the concubine opera actor in Farewell My Concubine.
