Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province, might not be high on the list of cities for foreign visitors to China, but if officials there have their way, it could become a top destination.
The picturesque city, located about 200 kilometers southwest of Shanghai, is full of scenic spots and boasts of a rich history of over 5,000 years. Government officials in the province talk boldly about cooperation between Zhejiang and Shanghai in the areas of tourism and industry.
"Foreign visitors know Shanghai very well but Hangzhou is far less familiar to them, therefore we shall make full use of the city of Shanghai to build up our fame," said Ma Shiyong, vice mayor of Hangzhou.
Lu Wenge, vice-governor of Zhejiang Province, cited three ways in which Zhejiang can support Shanghai's development: human resources, industry, and tourism.
Both officials said they hope visitors to China will recognize Hangzhou as a city located just hours away from Shanghai.
"By year 2002, it will take four hours from Shanghai to every city within the province by car," said Guo Xuehuan, director of the Traffic Department of Zhejiang Province. "I believe that target will be crucial to achieve more economic cooperation between Zhejiang and Shanghai."
In Lu's opinion, Zhejiang is one of the provinces which contribute the most in the area of human resources.
