Will future computers be able to look, listen, study and talk like humans? Will computers be able to sketch out the real scenery in the style of an artist? These interesting topics concerning intelligent computing were discussed in Beijing on Wednesday by computer scientists from home and abroad and 1,000-plus Chinese university students fascinated about this field.
The international workshop, named "Computing in the 21st Century Conference - Embracing the Age of Intelligent Computing," was co-sponsored by National Science Foundation of China and Microsoft Research China.
Experts gave lectures on "machinery intelligence," "the new generation of multi-media" and "the new generation of humanized operating panels," and answered relevant questions from the audience.
Experts introduced a computing system which can make detailed sketches of a person's face like an artist. Lecturers also described the personalized on-line service which can provide specific e-information, musical products and advertisements suitable for individuals.
Some experts told the audience that in the intelligent computing era, libraries may change their traditional functions, becoming providers for information searching tools and source-sharing licenses.
"As research on intelligent computing will eventually equip computers with human capabilities like speaking and listening," vice president of Microsoft Dan Ling said, "intelligent machinery will dramatically change people's way of life."
When asked whether intelligent machinery will one day become out of human control, vice president of Microsoft Rick Rashid answered that since computers will never have self-consciousness like human beings, even the fastest machines will be unable to simulate the complicated thinking patterns of humans.
