Beijing authorities are drafting sex education guidelines for primary and middle schools to cope with increasing sexual activity among teenagers, Thursday's Beijing Morning Post reported.

 

 

The guidelines will help fill the vacuum of sex education for young people which was a taboo topic in Chinese society.

 

The educational authorities have authorized the Beijing Sex Health Education Research Center to conduct a survey on sex education among city primary and middle schools.

 

"The sex education guidelines will be issued based on the survey results," said Zhang Meimei, vice president of the research center.

 

Sex education will start with higher grades of primary schools and cover physiological, psychological and legal areas, according to the newspaper.

 

And the young have become increasingly open about sex. In a recent survey 6.2 percent of the 2,000 students interviewed said they had their first sexual experience before the age of 16. Over half the interviewees said a one-night stand was "understandable."
