Free Concert Week Kicks off Soon
Five concerts will be staged free of charge during the second Free Concert Week sponsored by Volkswagen (China) Sound Foundation. The event runs in Beijing from July 17 to 25.

Participating artists will also provide free master classes for children studying the piano and violin.

1. Du Taihang, a Chinese pianist with a successful career in Europe, will give a recital of works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy.

2. Twenty-two-year-old Chinese violinist, Li Chuanyun, will give a performance including Bach's "Adagio Sonata in G minor," Strauss' "Sonata for violin and piano."

A student of the Juilliard School of Music, Li has won several international competitions. Canadian pianist Robert Koenig will play the obbligato at the concert.

3. Israeli pianist Einat Fabrikant, praised by one critic as "a rising star with a unique and individual interpretation," will play Bach's "Partita in D major," Debussy's "Douze Etudes II, VII, VIII and IX" during her solo concert.

4. Violinist Xie Nan will collaborate with pianist Huang Yameng in a concert consisting of both Western pieces like Ravel's "Jeux D'eau," Chopin's "Marzurkas," and Chinese works like Ma Sicong's "Longing for Home" and Sha Hankun's "The Shepherd's Song."

Both of the girls were born to families of musicians, and have won awards in various contests.

5. The last concert will be of chamber music played by pianist Li Yun and a number of Chinese musicians.

Although a famous musician in China, Li got a chance to study piano in Paris in 1985. Since then, she has been busy with some top European orchestras, and toured in France, Belgium, Spain, Sweden and Poland.
