Run Funds Cancer Research

Funding for local cancer research is expected to expand with the launch of a jogging campaign, called the Terry Fox Run, in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province.

Known as the "Marathon of Hope," the charity program aims to collect money for local cancer research.

To be held on November 13, the campaign, the second in the city, begins accepting volunteer applications on November 1.

"About 10,000 are expected to take part in the run," said Jim Feir, consul-general of Canada in Guangzhou, over the weekend.

The run, attracting some 2,700 volunteers last year, raised about 300,000 yuan (US$37,000), which went to the tumour research center affiliated with Sun Yat-sen University.

Terry Fox, a hero in the hearts of Canadian people, born in 1959, was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) when he was 18.

He had initiated a run across his native country, called the "Marathon of Hope," to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
