Rossini’s "The Barber of Seville" will make its opera debut in China on December 14 at Shanghai Grand Theatre.
"The Barber of Seville" is a semi-staged production as a comic opera in two acts performed by Shanghai Broadcasting Orchestra and Shanghai Opera House.
The opera has attracted a contingent of renowned musicians to play the leading roles. Baritone Liao Changyong will be star as Figaro, the barber.
Liang Ning, one of the brightest young mezzo-sopranos will play the role of Rosina, the heroine.
David N. Gustafson, who has acquired a reputation as one of the sweetest voiced tenors in opera, has been cast as Count Almaviva.
Hu Yongyan will act as the conductor and stage director of the performance.
"The Barber of Seville" is one of the most popular operas in music history, ever since its premiere in 1816.
On this occasion, the production draws a unique approach by presenting and applying many well-known designer's works in fashion, accessories and cosmetics into the opera.
"We are hoping that through this production the audience in the city will experience cultural greatness in history, as well as a sense of closer association between opera and contemporary life- style," organizers said.
