China, Tajikistan Sign Joint Statement

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Tajikistan President Emomali Sharipovich Rakhmonov signed a joint statement here Friday following their official talks.

The statement says the two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations, regional situation and issues of common concern, and reached broad consensus.

The two sides also signed a supplementary agreement on the border issues between China and Tajikistan and other documents concerning bilateral cooperation.

A joint statement issued at the end of their meetings says that China and Tajikistan have scored positive outcome in resolving border issues left over in history.

China and Tajikistan both highly appreciate the agreement reached on border issues saying this signifies the comprehensive resolution of border issues between the two countries left over in history, which provides still wider prospects for the expansion of bilateral ties in the new century.

The two sides stress the importance of carrying out mutually-beneficial economic and trade cooperation.

In the joint statement, Tajikistan reiterates its adherence to One-China policy and support to China's cause of reunification, opposition to any attempts aimed to create "two Chinas" or "One China, one Taiwan" and to "Taiwan Independence, and refusal to have any official ties or official contacts with Taiwan.

China supports the efforts made by Tajikistan and its leaders to safeguard the independence and sovereignty, maintain the country's stability, and tackle the social and economic problems cropping up during their post-war reconstruction.

Both sides stand for abiding by the principles governing international relations, such as the respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each nation, mutual non-interference in each other's internal affairs, and the resolution of differences and disputes through friendly consultations.

They also agree to support the United Nations to give scope to its leading role in resolving international and regional issues.

In addition, they agree to help establish an effective mechanism within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to deal with all challenges, and to make concerted efforts for the early passage of the SCO charter and the founding of the SCO anti-terrorism agency at Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan.

The two sides decide to expand cooperation in the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism, which pose the main threat to the regional security and stability.

The two sides note that there should not be duel standards in counter-terrorism.

The statement also says both sides voice their support to the moves taken by the Afghan interim government in maintaining domestic peace and stability and hope that Afghan Loya Jirgah, or the National Council, will operate smoothly and a broad-based transitional government representing the interests of all ethnic groups will be elected.

Tajikistan President Rakhmonov invited President Jiang Zemin to pay an official, goodwill visit to his country and the Chinese president gladly accepted the invitation.
