International Women's Day (IWD) Celebrated

With International Women's Day (IWD) around the corner, countries including China, Cambodia and Pakistan held celebrations to mark the day.

  • China Calls for World Efforts to Promote Status of Women

China on Tuesday called upon the international community and all governments to take specific steps in order to promote the status of women, who are mostly among vulnerable groups in many societies.

The appeal came as Wang Yingfan, the head of the Chinese delegation to the 46th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, was speaking to the international gathering on women.

"We appeal to the international community to provide more assistance to developing countries in a way that women can fully benefit from economic globalization," he said.

  • Declaration on Protection of Women's Rights Issued in Cambodia

The Women's Ministry of Cambodia on Monday afternoon issued a declaration on protection of women's rights in the country at the celebration of the International Women's Day.

The declaration, read out at the celebration held at the Council of Ministers building, appealed to leaders at all levels in the country to help eliminate violence and discrimination against women and children.

It called on the leaders to increase and target investment towards widening opportunities for economic development for women, especially those with disabilities in all sectors.

Chinese Embassy to Cambodia held a tea party to celebrate the International Women's Day at the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh on Wednesday afternoon.

  • Afghan and Pakistani Women to Celebrate Together

On the occasion of International Women's Day (IWD) 2002, the United Nations System in Pakistan, together with the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), planned an event today, bringing together Afghan and Pakistani women in a unique gesture of solidarity.

According to a press release issued Monday by the UN Information Center (UNIC) in Islamabad, several hundred women in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and women in refugee camps around Peshawar have been asked to embroider on plain cloth a scene or writing of their choice illustrating the theme of this year: Afghan Women Today -- Realities and Opportunities.

Young school and college women will also join in. It was scheduled that today they would gather at the Pakistan Sports Complex (Jinnah Stadium) in Islamabad and weave their individual work into one large embroidery panel.
