More than a month after the vote, final official results from Peru's April 8 general elections were made public here Sunday, largely confirming earlier unofficial polls.
According to the national election commission, centrist candidate Alejandro Toledo and Social Democrat Alan Garcia will face off in a runoff presidential election.
Toledo finished the first round of voting with 3,871,167 votes, or 36.51 percent of the ballot, according to the commission.
Garcia came in second with 2,732,857 ballots, or 25.78 percent of the vote.
The remaining candidates ranked as follows^Lourdes Flores -- 2,576,653 votes, or 24.3 percent;
Fernando Olivera -- 1,044,207 votes, or 9.85 percent;
Carlos Bolona -- 179,243 votes, or 1.69 percent;
Ciro Galvez -- 85,436 votes, or 0.81 percent;
Marco Arrunategui -- 79,077 votes, or 0.75 percent;
Ricardo Noriega -- 33,080 votes, or 0.31 percent.
The commission said 10.28 percent of the ballots were blank, while 3.28 percent were nullified.
Attempts by a number of candidates to contest election results delayed the released of the final tally, according to election officials.
