The number of mobile phone subscribers has been increasing considerably in recent years in this east China metropolis, with the total number reaching 6.2 million by the end of 2001.
The number exceeds that of fixed telephone line subscribers, which now stands at about six million, according to the city's information industry officials.
On December 31, 2001, the city ended the use of the network for analog mobile phones, only 14 years after the appearance of the type.
By 1992 the city had only 10,200 mobile phone users. From 1994 to 1999, the figure shot up to 1.5 million. Last year, the city saw at least 1.8 million new mobile phone users, indicating that now one every two Shanghai people has at least one mobile phone.
