China Ends Search for Mine Flood Victims

China has wrapped up search-and-rescue for the victims of a mine flood in Nandan County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in mid July, which is believed to have claimed 81 lives.

Sources from the local public security authority said 80 bodies have been found, but one more is still missing.

Seventy-eight bodies were found in Lajiapo, Longshan and Tianjiao mines, and two more had been cremated by the illegal operators of the Longshan Mine before being found by the search- and-rescue team.

On July 17, two tin mines in Nandan County were flooded. The accident had not been reported until two weeks later. On August 4, the central government sent an investigation team to Nandan.

At least five top officials in Nandan have been sacked or suspended for neglecting their duties.
