WHO Praises HK's 'Heroic' Action on SARS
An expert from the World Health Organization (WHO) said Hong Kong has undertaken "heroic" containment measures in its battle against SARS, said a government release Tuesday.

During a video conference between Geneva and Hong Kong on Tuesday, David Heymann, executive director of WHO communicable diseases, thanked Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food Yeoh Eng-kiong, on behalf of the world health body, for Hong Kong's efforts and said the WHO appreciated the work in containing SARS.

The video conference was organized so Yeoh could present a WHO panel with the latest information on SARS in Hong Kong.

At the end of the videoconference, Heymann invited the health secretary to address the World Health Assembly in Geneva on May 20and present Hong Kong's experience in combating the SARS epidemic.

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa will receive from the Central People's Government the first batch of medical supplies and protective gear for the prevention of SARS on Thursday.

At a ceremony held in Huanggang, Shenzhen on Thursday, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan will represent the Central People's Government to present the supplies to the Hong Kong chief executive, said a HK government press release on Tuesday.

Director of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council Liao Hui will also be present.

At a meeting with Tung on April 12, President Hu Jintao pledged the Central People's Government's full support for the Hong Kong SAR in the battle against the disease.

Premier Wen Jiabao also reiterated this support at a meeting with Tung in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 29.
