| Forest Fire in Lijiang Brought Under Control |

A forest fire happening at Lijiang City, southwest China's Yunnan Province, on Wednesday afternoon, has been brought under control, sources from the fire-quenching headquarters said on Saturday. The fire, which broke out at Cimeige of Yulong County, around 6 PM on Wednesday, has not posed a threat to or influence on the famous snow-clad Yulong Mountain scenery some 20 km away. Affected forest area extends 133 ha, with primarily regrown forests and some primitive forests being destroyed, said an official from the fire fighting headquarters. More than 2,000 personnel, including those from the military and the armed police, plus one helicopter and about 100 tanker trucks have been sent to quench the fire. Cause of the fire was unknown by press time. Chu-Chia Lin, a professor from Taiwan's ChengChi University made the remark Saturday at the ongoing Cross-Straits Economic and Trade Forum in Beijing. The Chinese mainland has been urging for the "three direct links" in mail, transport and trade across the Straits since 1979. The Taiwan authorities, however, are unwilling to cooperate under the pretext of "security concerns" and "technical issues." As the trade and personnel exchanges across the Taiwan Straits become more frequent, the figures are still conservative and underestimated, he said. The indirect transport is one of the major obstacles restricting the competitiveness of Taiwan's products and enterprises, he said. The huge costs brought by the indirect flight and shipment make Taiwan impossible to become a regional economic center, and reduce Taiwan's attraction to external investment, he said.
