Two sections of a bridge under construction, which will link Haidian Island to the city proper of Haikou, capital of southernmost China's island Province of Hainan, joined Thursday afternoon.
Work on the project started in 1998 with a 50-million-US-dollarloan provided by the Japanese government. Total investment will amount to 667 million yuan upon full completion by October 2002.
The 2,663-meter bridge across the sea, the first one on the island, will be a landmark the tourist city.
