Indonesian Navy troops shot at a Chinese fishing boat, the Fuyuan 123, that was trying to escape from a routine check on Monday, killing a Chinese fisherman and wounding two others. The Chinese Embassy in Indonesia confirmed on Wednesday that the incident happened in the Arafuru Sea off Papua Island.
Embassy Counselor, Yu Hongyao, told Xinhua that China was dissatisfied with the way the Indonesian Navy had dealt with the situation.
Embassy officials are making representations to the Indonesians, and are awaiting timely information on any developments, Yu said.
The identities of the deceased and the injured are also being confirmed, he added.
Local media quoted Toni Syaiful, the press officer from the Indonesian Navy's Eastern Fleet, as saying that the incident occurred at about 10:50 a.m. local time, and a total of 13 shots were fired.
The warship has been detained in Surabaya on the east of the main island Java, Syaiful said.
The Arafuru Sea is about 3,800 km east of Jakarta.
