FM: Hopes for Six-Party Talks

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said yesterday that China hoped the delegations involved in the six-party talks on the Korean Peninsular nuclear issue will continue making efforts to score positive results by showing flexibility with a pragmatic and candid spirit.

"First of all, we believe that all suggestions and concerns issued by the six parties are worth considering. Secondly, every concerned party will seriously study the issue of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," Qin Gang said at Thursday's regular press conference.

He also acknowledged that differences still remain on how to achieve the denuclearization of the peninsula among the parties concerned.

Talking about the recent meeting between President Hu Jintao and US President George W. Bush in New York, Qin said it was conducive to healthy and stable development of bilateral relations.

He said China highly commended Washington's stance on the Taiwan issue and that both sides are looking forward to wider cooperation.

In his meeting with Hu, Bush said the US side understood Taiwan is a highly sensitive issue and that its one-China policy will not change.

Bush also expressed his appreciation of China's assistance to hurricane-hit areas, Qin said.

"US government officials spoke highly of China's help on different occasions," said Qin, adding that he hoped the assistance will help people in disaster-stricken states to rebuild their homeland.

According to the spokesperson, Bush said he looked forward to visiting China following this year's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea.

Qin said China is ready to help other developing countries eradicate poverty at an early date and promote their economic development.

He said that among the proposals China put forward for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), one is that China will provide US$10 billion as preferential loans and preferential buyer's credit for export in three years to developing countries in an effort to improve their infrastructure construction and promote cooperation among enterprises.

This important measure was announced by Hu on Wednesday at the High-Level Meeting on Financing for Development of the UN 60th anniversary summit, he said.

Qin said the measure demonstrated China's willingness to help other developing countries to shake off poverty and make due contribution to their economic development.

"We hope to enhance cooperation among countries, bridge the gap between the South and the North to ensure realization of the MDGs," he said, adding that China will make joint efforts with the international community to this end.

Qin also announced that the UK's Princess Anne will visit from September 20 to 24.
