The establishment of the first Chinese university in the Middle East, the Egyptian Chinese University (ECU), was agreed in Cairo, Egypt on Sunday
The accord was signed by Wu Sike, the Chinese ambassador to Egypt, Cheng Wei, president of Liaoning University, and Karima Abdullah Karim, board chairwoman of Egypt's International Education Institution (IEI).
The ECU plans to formally enroll 900 undergraduate students for the academic year 2006-2007 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Egypt.
Liaoning University will be responsible for the new university's course planning and textbook compilation. It will send 8-10 teachers to ECU to teach major courses each year.
The IEI will be responsible for infrastructure projects, including the construction of teaching complexes.
