Peacekeepers Ready to Leave for Haiti

China's first group of peacekeeping riot police passed their United Nations examinations this week, according to the Ministry of Public Security. They will travel to Haiti in September to participate in the UN peacekeeping mission there.

The forces consist of 125 police officers who have undergone three months of special training. They passed exams held by the United Nations on Monday.

Zhou Yongkang, state councilor and public security minister, visited the training center on Tuesday and greeted the trainees on behalf of the Chinese government.

Zhou pointed out that sending officers to take part in UN peacekeeping missions is an important diplomatic move reflecting the role and influence of China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, in international affairs. It also showcases China's dedication to maintaining world peace and stability.

He directed the police officers to observe all UN rules and regulations, respect local customs and fulfill all tasks.
