Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Sunday paid a visit to Hou Xianglin and Wang Daheng, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Wen, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), extended his greetings to the two senior scientists on behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council.
Hou, 91, is one of the trailblazers in oil refining technologies. He has served a number of institutions and organizations, including the prestigious Tsinghua University, the Ministry of Petroleum Industry, the China Petrochemical Corporation and the Chinese Petroleum Society.
The premier met with Hou at his home and encouraged him to make greater contributions to the development of China's oil industry. Wen said that with the increasing development of China's economy, the petroleum consumption in the country has also experienced a rapid growth, urging Hou to play an active role in this field.
Wen also visited Wang's home. Wang, an 88-year-old scientist renowned in the field of applied optics, has made great contributions to the founding and development of applied optics, optical engineering, optical fine machinery, laser technology and other subjects of optical science.
Wen said he has received Wang's suggestions on the development of China's aviation industry, which highlighted professional cultivation and advanced research.
The premier also expressed his thanks to the two scientists for their persisting concern and support for the country's scientific and technological causes despite their senior ages.
