Chinese and US scientists have discovered a new particle at the Beijing Electron Position Collider, which is hard to be explained with any known particles, according to scientists from the Institute of High Energy Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences Wednesday.
A detailed study on the newly-observed particle shows that the possibility of explaining this particle by any known particles can be definitely excluded, said a news release by the institute.
The important feature of this new particle is its narrow width, which is very different from that of a conventional meson -- the composite of quark and anti-quark, according to the release.
Chinese scientists with the institute said the discovery of this particle, together with other recent discoveries of possible multi-quark states, suggests that the strong interaction theory, or Quantum Chromodynamics theory, can not satisfactorily explain all the relevant experimental results achieved so far.
This new observation has brought studies of the new resonance states to a new high in the field of particle physics, they said.
The new finding was made by the Multinational Beijing Spectrometer (BES) International Collaboration research group after analyzing 58 million cases of J particle.
