China will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Cheng Yanqiu (1904-58), one of the greatest Peking Opera actors, next year. The Ministry of Culture, the culture bureau of Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai will organize commemorative activities showcasing Cheng's works in the three cities this month.
On Friday, a ceremony will be held in the Great Hall of the People. Celebrated Peking Opera performers, well-known theatre critics, Cheng's family and protégés will attend.
They will also be invited to forums held in Beijing on Saturday and Sunday. The forums will discuss Cheng's contribution to Peking Opera in his lifetime, and Peking Opera in the 21st century.
The opening show at the Chang'an Theatre on Saturday will feature highlights from Cheng's repertoires performed by renowned actors and actresses including Li Shiji, Li Weikang, Zhao Baoxiu, Yu Kuizhi, Zhan Manling and Zhang Huoding.
From December 7 to 10, Li Shiji, one of Cheng's best-known disciples, will lead other popular actors and actresses to present Cheng's signature repertoires. They include Xue Pinggui and Wang Baochuan (Hongzong Liema), Tragedy of Jiao Zhongqing and Liu Lanzhi (Kongque Dongnan Fei), Dream of a Bride (Chungui Meng) and The Lucky Purse (Suolin Nang).
The shows will tour Tianjin on December 12 and 13 and Shanghai from 18 to 20.
The China Philately Corporation has released souvenir stamps which will be displayed at the ceremony on their first-issue day at Chang'an Theatre.
China Central Television will also air a documentary entitled Cheng Yanqiu featuring the master's life and artistic achievements.
China Culture and Arts Publishing House will publish nine books compiling Cheng's scripts, photos, paintings, personal letters and other written material next year.
