Road crews had repaved 118 roads with a combined area of 1.3 million square meters in downtown and suburban districts in the past five months, officials said on May 30. Before September, 10 more roads will be repaved.
The road work is part of Shanghai's preparations for the Informal APEC Economic Leadership Meeting that the city will host in October. Also, 360,000 square meters of sidewalks were covered with bricks of different colors and 73 kilometers of roadside railings were replaced. All of the renovation work cost 380 million yuan (US$45.78 million), with 270 million yuan being provided by the city government and the rest paid by 10 district governments.
