In the hope of increasing its urban green coverage rate to over 22 percent by the end of the year, Shanghai will develop more than 10 million square meters of public green space this year, according to Shanghai Greening Bureau.
In addition to large patches of grass that are to be planted among commercial and residential communities, Shanghai will also plant 40,000 big trees and 100 kinds of horticulture plants this year, said Hu Yunhua, director of the bureau.
For years, Shanghai, the economic center of China, has been making unremitting efforts to improve its environment and provide more green area for its citizens.
With 14.8 million square meters of greenery planted last year, Shanghai’s total public green area has so far increased to 126 million square meters.
