Beijing's Deputy Mayor,Liu Haiyan, says the capital plans to lead the country in its imposition of Euro III emission standards on motor vehicles by 2008.
The deputy mayor talked about the initiative Saturday, at the ongoing second China Changchun International Automobile Fair in northeast China.
Liu says Beijing ranks first in China in terms of the number of motor vehicles and exhaust emissions have become one of the major causes of pollution in the city.
Beijing has already implemented the 1998 Euro I emission standards to help address the problem. And the municipal government also plans to put into service more buses and taxis that run on natural gas and build more than 150 natural gas stations by 2007.
At the same time, China's automobile enterprises vow to make more environment-friendly cars to meet the stringent emission standards.
