A senior government official has been deprived of his post and his membership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) following charges of corruption.
The action was taken by the Ministry of Supervision and the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection against Wang Leyi, former deputy director of the General Administration of Customs (GAC).
Wang has been charged with accepting bribes totalling 530,000 yuan (US$64,100) from businessman Yang Gaiqing in 1997. He is also accused of illegally helping Yang purchase low prices cars that had been confiscated by customs.
Another charge is that Wang illegally seized state-owned and other people's property worth a total of 630,000 yuan (US$75,900), and accepted illicit gifts worth 290,000 yuan (US$35,000).
The Ministry of Supervision and the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection have urged all CPC members and relevant departments to take heed of Wang's case and fight corruption in whatever form it takes.
