The Ministry of Public Security announced Wednesday that the catastrophic explosion on September 8 in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was an accident caused by road conditions.
A bumpy road rocked a vehicle carrying explosives, which therefore blew up, experts said.
Ministry of Public Security experts reached this conclusion after examining evidence and completing an investigation.
At 7:30 pm that evening, a vehicle was travelling on Xishan Road in the western suburbs of Urumqi, carrying explosives set to be destroyed. The explosives were originally used for training local military personnel.
Sixty people were killed and more than 200 others injured. More than 20 motor vehicles and some houses were damaged.
A number of people wounded are receiving medical treatment by local doctors as well as doctors from Beijing.
The majority of the wounded are in stable condition and slowly recovering, according to medical workers.
Only one of the wounded remains in serious condition, according to the doctors, who are planning to transfer six other patients to hospitals that have better surgical equipment.
