Four Chinese middle school students won two gold medals along with one silver and one bronze medal at the 12th International Olympiad in Informatics 2000 (IOI2000), which ended in Beijing recently.
A total of 274 students from 70 countries and regions participated in the contest which produced 23 gold medals, 47 silver and 69 bronze.
A student from Russia got the highest mark in the competition, and Chinese student Xu Jing was ranked first among all the female participants.
At the closing ceremony of the contest, Zhu Guangya, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a well-known scientist, encouraged the students to study more and promote the development of informatics.
The IOI2000 is jointly hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Education, the China Association for Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Beijing Municipality and the China Computer Federation. It is the first Olympiad competition in computers held in Asia in its 12-year history.
Initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1988, the goal of IOI is to stimulate students’ interest in computer science and information technology, and foster exceptionally talented students from various countries and share scientific knowledge and culture. China participated in the first IOI hosted by Bulgaria in 1989.
