Chronicle of Major Developments in China's Civil Aviation Sector in October
October 1. The General Administration of Civil Aviation of China adopted a new pricing standard for federal air lines, setting a ceiling of no more than 10 percent of the open price.

October 22. Sources from United Airlines, Northwest Airlines and Air France said that the three air transport companies would offer Chinese travelers going abroad an extremely special price.

October 24. In order to reduce the waste from operation with only a few passengers on some domestic lines, the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China sets control over the total number of domestic flights, but feeder direct flights are excepted from this control in order to encourage the opening of air routes to west China.

October 25. The State Development Planning Commission issued a circular allowing an appropriate rise in airfares on domestic routes beginning in November for the purpose of alleviating the impact of rising prices of aviation fuel on the transportation cost of airline companies and easing the difficulties in their business operation.

October 25. The general managers of the 23 domestic airline companies met in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, to sign an agreement, deciding to extend the joint management of ticket pricing to the end of March 2001 and to raise the ticket price by 15 percent.

October 27. There is a media report that North Airlines plans to give individual passengers a 45 percent discount at most on its eight routes from November 1, 2000 to March 24, 2001.

October 28. The Beijing Business Department of North Airlines says that allowing a discount on some air routes is just a promotion idea and the company needs to make a careful study in relation to the exact routes where the discount will be allowed, the rate of discount and the management of the system.

October 30. Some media report that Air China, East Airlines and South Airlines in China will reduce airfares on international routes by a large margin.

October 31. The three Chinese airline companies confirm that they will not change prices on international routes.
