China's World Heritage Sites

Four new sites were added to the World Heritage list of sites during the 24th meeting of UNESCO 's World Heritage Committee in Australia, bringing the number of Chinese sites on the list to 27.

The new sites are Mount Qingcheng and Dujiangyan (Dujiang Dyke) in western Sichuan Province, Longmen Grottoes in central Henan Province, the imperial mausoleums of the Ming and Qing dynasties, which are separately located in Hubei and Hebei provinces, and the ancient Xidi and Hong villages in Anhui Province.

In China, Beijing, with five sites, has the largest number of sites on the list. Sichuan has the second largest number, with four sites.

The 27 sites that are on the World Heritage List are:

Taishan Mountain in east China's Shandong Province, culture and nature site, 1987;

The Great Wall near Beijing, culture site, 1987;

The Palace Museum of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) in downtown Beijing, culture site, 1987;

The Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang in northwest China's Gansu Province, culture site, 1987;

The mausoleum of Qinshihuang, the first emperor of Qin Dynasty (BC221-BC206), near Xi'an in Shaanxi Province, culture site, 1987;

The Peking Man Site near Zhoukoudian in the southwestern suburbs of Beijing, culture site, 1987;

Huangshan Mountain in east China's Anhui Province, culture and nature site, 1990;

Jiuzhaigou Scenic Resort in southwest China's Sichuan Province, nature site, 1992;

Huanglong Scenic Resort in Sichuan, nature site, 1992;

Wulingyuan Scenic Resort of Zhangjiajie in central-south China' s Hunan Province, nature site, 1992;

The Chengde Imperial Summer Resort and adjacent temples in north China's Hebei Province, culture site, 1994;

Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, culture site, 1994;

The Confucian Manor, Confucian Temple, and Confucian Woods in Qufu in east China's Shandong Province, culture site, 1994;

Ancient buildings of Wudang Mountain in central China's Hubei Province, culture site, 1994;

Lushan Mountain near Jiujiang city in east China's Jiangxi Province, culture site, 1996;

Emei Mountain and the Leshan Mountain Giant Buddha in southwestern Sichuan Province, culture and nature site, 1996;

The ancient town of Pingyao in north China's Shanxi Province, culture site, 1997;

The gardens of Suzhou city in east China's Jiangsu Province, culture site, 1997;

The town of Lijiang in southwest China's Yunnan Province, culture site, 1997;

The Summer Palace in Beijing, culture site, 1998.

The Temple of Heaven in Beijing, culture site, 1998;

Wuyi Mountain in east China's Fujian Province, culture and nature site, 1999;

Dazu Rock Carvings in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, culture site, 1999.

Mount Qingcheng and Dujiangyan (Dujiang Dyke) in Sichuan Province, culture site, 2000.

Longmen Grottoes in Henan Province, culture site, 2000.
