Premier Zhu Rongji yesterday concluded a week of meetings in
Beijing to receive public input into the proposals of the Communist
Party of China (CPC) Central Committee for the 10th Five-Year
Plan (2001-05) for National Economic and Social Development.
The proposals,
approved by the Fifth Plenum of the 15th CPC Central Committee
last October, have been open for public comment.
The premier held
meetings on Monday, Tuesday and yesterday to hear the opinions
of a variety of delegates from the science, technology, health,
culture, education, sports and business sectors.
Most participants
said they were satisfied with the fundamentals of the proposals.
They said the proposed
plan analyzes the nation's existing problems and sets out
a clear vision for the next five years.
Development is
the most important principle that should direct governmental
policies, and it is the key to resolving all problems facing
China.
Rapid economic
development must be maintained to solve the problems existing
in society, they said.
The participants
raised concerns about agriculture and the level of farmers'
income, economic structural readjustment, the reform of State-owned-enterprises,
the western development strategy, technological advancement
and democratic and legislative reforms.
The premier expressed
his appreciation for the participants' input and said all
suggestions would be carefully considered.
Zhu also exchanged
ideas with the participants on how to establish a social security
system and increase the development of western areas of China.
