UN General Assembly President Ali Treki and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced sadness after learning of the earthquake that struck western China on the morning of April 14, 2010, according to UN News Service.

The earthquake has killed more than 500 people and injured thousands more by this morning, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Media reports say the quake, which registered 7.1 on the Richter scale, was centered in Yushu of Qinghai Province and took place just before 8 a.m.

In a statement issued by his office, Dr. Treki "expresses solidarity with and sends his condolences and prayers to the people and government of China on this tragedy."

Mr. Ban, in a statement released by his spokesperson, said the UN is ready to provide assistance to the Chinese government if needed.

"The Secretary-General recognizes the efforts being undertaken by the Government of China to assess the situation and to assist those affected by the earthquake."
