The Dongguan government has claimed that the primary reason for the ban on pig breeding centers on the fact that Dongguan's environment is unable to bear the pollution resulting from pig husbandry. Dongguan government data shows that the amount of pollutants produced by one pig equals what is produced by 7-10 people. Currently Dongguan has 750,000 pigs. This means each year the city government has to spend over 400 million yuan to treat the sewage.
Liang Guoying, also vice mayor of Donggguan, further argued that Dongguan is a manufacturing city with many factories and a floating population. A ban on pig breeding would not only reduce pollution but also conserve the land for other less destructive industries. From the perspective of a social division of labor, a city always gives priority to the development of the most advantageous industry and eliminates or transfers backward industries. Pig breeding has become a negative factor in Dongguan's development. In fact, such a ban on pig breeding is considered to be a sound decision; it will not be revoked any time soon. Moreover, the ban on pig breeding will gradually extend to a similar ban on poultry breeding. According to Liang, the municipal government will do a relevant job to guarantee pork supplies and reorganize local pig breeders.
