WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) --The first round of the 2025 US Open singles events concluded on Tuesday with defending champion Jannik Sinner, as well as top contenders Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka all securing convincing victories.

Men's top seed Sinner delivered a masterclass, dismantling Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 in just 98 minutes. "It feels great to be back here. It's a very special tournament," said Sinner.

No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev also advanced in straight sets, winning 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-4 against Chile's Alejandro Tabilo.

On the women's side, the champions were in full force. Swiatek was ruthless in a 6-1, 6-2 rout of Colombia's Emiliana Arango, notching her 65th consecutive WTA singles opening match victory - a new record in the open era.

Two-time US Open champion Osaka was seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time since 2022, and looked sharp in a 6-3, 6-4 win over Greet Minnen of Belgium.

The biggest scare came for Gauff. The 2023 US Open champion endured a nearly three-hour battle, eventually overcoming Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-5.

Gauff, who has been working to fix her serving woes, hit 10 double faults but held her nerve at key moments. "It wasn't the best today, but it came in when it mattered in the final games," she remarked.

Chinese star Wang Xinyu mounted a resilient comeback against American opponent Caroline Dolehide, securing a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory to advance to the second round. Despite a slow start, Wang adjusted her tactics, finding success with simpler and more decisive play.

"It was a very tough match. My first-serve percentage was low in the first set. After that, I slowly adjusted and clarified my thinking," said Wang, who now faces 13th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.

In contrast, China's Bu Yunchaokete fell short in his pursuit of a maiden Grand Slam main-draw win, succumbing to France's wildcard Valentin Royer 1-6, 4-6, 6-7(1). This marks his fifth first-round exit in a major. Enditem
