CHENGDU, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- A court in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Wednesday sentenced Qin Rupei, former vice chairman of the people's government of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, to death with a two-year reprieve for accepting bribes.
Qin has been deprived of his political rights for life, all of his personal property will be confiscated, and his illegal gains from bribery will be recovered and turned over to the national treasury, according to the verdict issued by the Deyang Municipal Intermediate People's Court.
The court found that between 1998 and 2024, Qin took advantage of the various positions he held in Guizhou Province and Guangxi to benefit others in matters related to project contracts, business operations and job reassignments. In return, he accepted money and valuables worth a total of 216 million yuan (about 30.25 million U.S. dollars).
The court determined that Qin's offenses had brought particularly serious harm to the interests of the state and the people. However, he received a lenient sentence due to mitigating factors, including his confession and evident remorse, and the proactive return of his illicit gains. Enditem
