ZAGREB, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Croatian football legend Ivan Rakitic announced his retirement from professional football on Monday in an emotional farewell video, reflecting on a decorated career that spanned nearly two decades.
The 37-year-old midfielder, who was part of Croatia's golden generation and a runner-up at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, began his career at Swiss club FC Basel before going on to play for Schalke 04, Sevilla, Barcelona, Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia, and most recently Hajduk Split in his native Croatia.
Among his most notable achievements are a UEFA Champions League title with Barcelona in 2015, two UEFA Europa League triumphs with Sevilla (2014, 2023), and Croatia's historic run to the World Cup final in Russia.
Barcelona paid tribute to Rakitic with a highlight video featuring memorable moments alongside stars such as Lionel Messi and Neymar. "What a journey it's been. Thank you for the beautiful memories," the club wrote on social media.
Rakitic earned 106 caps and scored 15 goals for Croatia's national team, forming a formidable midfield partnership with Luka Modric. In 2015, he was named both Footballer and Sportsman of the Year in Croatia.
According to reports, Rakitic could remain in the game, with a possible role as sporting director at Hajduk Split under consideration. Enditem
